Choose the question you want answered

Read the premise for a specific uncertainty. Who is someone really? Why did a relationship break down? What happened before the story began? A clear question makes it easier to tell an identity mystery from a crime investigation. Avoid reading a full plot summary if you would rather encounter revelations in the story itself.

How does mystery differ from hidden identity?

Mystery is a genre organized around discovery. Hidden Identity is a trope that can appear in romance, revenge, comedy, or fantasy without making investigation the main activity. A story can carry both labels when uncovering the identity is central to its structure.
