あらゆる寵愛を浴びて育った許家のお嬢さん、許期（きょき）は、実は許家の本当のお嬢さんではないことを知りました。そして、本当のお嬢さんである許明珠（きょめいじゅ）が認められて戻ってきてから、ずっと溺愛してくれていた両親と兄は許明珠の一方的な言葉を一方的に信じ始めました。許期がおばあさんを階段から突き落とし、意識不明に陥らせたと誤って信じていたため、許家の者たちは許期を女徳学校に送り込み、悔悟して改めるようにしました。その結果、許期は 3 年間もの非人的な苦しみを被り、元に戻せない生涯の障害を負ってしまいました。3 年後、許期は許家に迎え戻されました。許家の者たちは、かつてあの陽気で笑顔のあふれる許期が、今では他人を遠ざけるような態度を取ることに気づきました。
