Martha Lewis's husband Robert Sterling is killed in a construction accident. Pregnant, she also loses her daughter Sophie. Fifteen years later, she supports her son Matthew Lewis marrying into her family, the Sterling family, while secretly suffering from black lung disease. Rejected by her son, she runs a bun stall and meets Sophie, now CEO of the Sinclair Group. Matthew Lewis tricks her into selling her house to pay his debts, then deceives her into working as a maid for the Sterling family. Humiliated, she discovers the father-in-law resembles Robert Sterling. Sophie Sinclair uncovers the truth and seeks a reunion. At Lily's birthday gala, Cynthia Sterling insults Martha Lewis.
